The Democratic story of the heart of Kentucky bourbon country.
Nelson County sits in the heart of Kentucky, a place where rolling hills meet some of the most productive farmland in the state, where the world's finest bourbon is aged in warehouses that dot the countryside, and where a community of roughly 46,000 people has built something truly special. Our county seat, Bardstown, is proudly known as the "Bourbon Capital of the World" — and for good reason. Some of the most iconic names in bourbon, from Heaven Hill to Willett to Bardstown Bourbon Company, call Nelson County home.
But Nelson County is so much more than bourbon. It's historic downtown Bardstown, named the "Most Beautiful Small Town in America." It's the families who have farmed this land for generations. It's the teachers, first responders, small business owners, and factory workers who make this community run every single day. And it's a place with a deep Democratic tradition — a tradition we're proud to carry forward.
For generations, Nelson County has been home to Democrats who believe in the fundamental values that make Kentucky great: hard work, taking care of your neighbors, investing in your community, and building a future where everyone has a fair shot. The Democratic Party in Nelson County has always been about people — the working families, the farmers, the teachers, the union members, and the small business owners who are the backbone of this community.
Our Chair, Kenny Fogle, has served on the county party's executive committee for over 30 years. He's seen the party through good times and challenging times, and his belief is simple but powerful: "If we revive the Democratic Party, it won't be from the national level. It won't be from the state level. It'll be county by county by county."
That's what we're doing right here in Nelson County. We're not waiting for someone in Washington or Frankfort to fix things. We're building from the ground up, neighbor to neighbor, election to election, candidate to candidate.
Nelson County faces unique challenges and opportunities that shape our Democratic values and our candidates' platforms. Here are the issues that matter most to our community:
Kentucky is the only state that taxes bourbon barrels while they're aging in warehouses — and for good reason. This tax generates significant revenue for Nelson County and other bourbon-producing counties, funding schools, roads, and essential services. There have been legislative efforts to phase out this tax, which would blow a massive hole in local budgets without any plan to replace the revenue. Nelson County Democrats oppose eliminating this vital revenue source without a responsible alternative. Our bourbon industry is an economic engine, and it should contribute fairly to the community that hosts it.
Whiskey fungus (scientifically known as Baudoinia compniacensis) is a black mold that grows on homes, cars, and property near bourbon warehouses and distilleries. For years, residents living near these facilities have dealt with this persistent, unsightly, and potentially health-affecting fungus. Our candidates, including magistrate candidate Frankie Cambron and Judge/Executive candidate JT Roby, are working to hold distilleries accountable for the impact they have on neighboring properties and to find real solutions for affected residents.
Large-scale data centers — particularly those serving AI and cloud computing — have been proposed for Kentucky, including in our region. These facilities consume staggering amounts of water and electricity while creating relatively few permanent jobs. Several of our candidates, including JT Roby and JD Netherton, oppose unchecked data center development, citing concerns about the strain on our water supply (including Simpson's Lake) and local infrastructure. We support smart growth that creates good jobs without sacrificing our natural resources.
Not every part of Nelson County has the same access to infrastructure. Rural areas still struggle with unreliable internet — a problem that affects students doing homework, farmers running their businesses, and families trying to stay connected. Our candidates are fighting for rural broadband, safe paved roads in every district, and reliable water and sewer systems for all residents, no matter where they live.
Nelson County Democrats believe that citizens deserve to see exactly how their tax dollars are being spent. JT Roby's proposal for a "digital open gradebook" for the county budget — a transparent, publicly accessible system where anyone can see where money is going — exemplifies our commitment to open, accountable government. We also support holding quarterly fiscal court meetings in different communities across the county, so residents in Cox's Creek, Bloomfield, New Haven, and Boston have the same access to their government as those in Bardstown.
The Nelson County Democratic Party is committed to good government, honest candidates, and a stronger community for everyone. When you donate to our party, your money goes to electing candidates who will work hard for their constituents, to voter outreach that helps every voice be heard, and to events that bring our community together. We are accountable to you — because that's what being a Democrat in Nelson County is all about.
This is your county. This is your party. Together, we can build something great.
